Some semi-feral cats are actually stray cats who have been abused or abandoned and are now terrified of humans. These cats lack the knowledge to survive on their own. Some of these cats may be re-socialized, an important fact to remember since they are often rejected by established colonies.

Whenever possible, kittens are removed from feral cat colonies in an attempt to tame and adopt them out into a friendlier environment. These kittens are wild and need to be "socialized" in order to be suitable for adoption.

Dedicated volunteers understand that the process of socializing semi-feral cats or kittens requires a daily commitment of time and patience over several weeks or months, depending on the age of the animal. The more time spent on a daily basis with the cats, the shorter the socialization process will be. Because of the time required per fostered cat, SOS is always in need of committed Foster Parents. After the foster process, good homes are needed for the socialized cats and kittens. SOS adopts out most of its fostered cats through the Genesee County Animal Shelter. Some SOS cats are even relocated and given a better life when re-homed as barn cats.
